More pixels, different evidence
An enlarged raster image has more samples across its width and height. An ordinary resampler estimates them from nearby pixels; an AI model can also introduce learned patterns. Both change the file. Neither can establish the true lettering on an unreadable sign or the exact texture hidden in a tiny photograph. For a decorative print, a plausible result may be acceptable. For a factual record, plausibility is not enough. Keep those two purposes separate before choosing a tool.
Define the destination first
Write down the intended physical size, the crop and the resolution requested by the printer. Calculate the required pixel dimensions before processing. A file that is already large enough may only need careful export. Conversely, a large pixel count does not cure motion blur, missed focus or severe compression. Treat dimension sufficiency and visual fidelity as separate checks. This prevents a bigger download from becoming an automatic approval.
A concrete enlargement
Suppose a fictional image is 1200 by 1800 pixels and the requested print is 8 by 12 inches at 300 pixels per inch. The target is 2400 by 3600 pixels: twice each dimension and four times the pixel count. That arithmetic says what size to request. It says nothing about whether the new eyelashes, roof tiles or brush strokes are faithful. Compare sensitive areas with the source and inspect a physical proof before ordering a batch.
Choose the least disruptive route
Find a larger original before applying enhancement. If none exists, try a conservative enlargement on a copy and retain the original beside it. Reject a version that invents important details even when it looks cleaner at thumbnail size. Consider a smaller print or a composition with more surrounding space.
