Look upstream
The file in a message, social post or website may be a resized derivative rather than the best available source. Ask the owner for the original export, camera file, scan or design document. Check backups and the application’s export options. Preserve provenance and permission while doing so; finding a larger copy online does not establish a right to reproduce it. The goal is to recover genuine information, not simply locate a bigger-looking image.
Compare dimensions and content
File size in megabytes is not a reliable stand-in for detail. Compare pixel dimensions, compression and whether the larger version actually contains more useful information. A previous upscaled copy can be larger without being closer to the original. Inspect important areas and ask how the file was created. Keep the best source and a note of its origin. Avoid repeated JPEG saving during the search because each new derivative can complicate the comparison.
A common recovery example
A fictional artist sends a 1200 pixel-wide storefront image for a print order. Their original artwork export is 4000 pixels wide. Recovering that export supplies more genuine source information than beginning with the storefront thumbnail. It may also preserve cleaner edges or color information. Confirm that it is the same approved artwork version; a technically larger file with an outdated logo or signature is not the correct production master. Version and quality both matter.
When recovery fails
If no better source exists, record that limitation and decide whether the intended use tolerates reconstruction. A smaller print, a border or a different image can be a better outcome than aggressive enhancement. For a historical or evidentiary purpose, retain the unaltered source and clearly distinguish any interpretive version. Do not describe generated detail as recovered fact. The next step is a measured sizing and proof decision, not an unlimited sequence of AI attempts.
